Net metering, the system that allows your electric meter to spin backward to reflect the unused electrons your solar panels are producing, is under attack in several U.S. states.
Tor Valenza, aka Solar Fred, has outlined an action plan to help in the fight to save net metering in the United States. I recently spoke to Solar Fred on the Disruption! podcast. Among several interesting topics, I was keen to discuss this issue in particular. While he doesn’t believe the loss of net metering would be the coup de grace for solar, it would greatly affect the existing structure of the solar industry. The companies being most affected by this would be local installation companies. But this would also be a great blow to those that have already purchased their solar systems.
This post has been written to simply echo the sentiments expressed in Solar Fred’s renewableenergyworld.com article. In fact, I’m not going to paraphrase all of the details written in his article. I think Solar Fred has clearly articulated the problem and given helpful advice in how to fight the problem.
Fred calls for those in the solar industry to help raise awareness by blogging and so forth. I will take that one step forward and call for all citizens to get involved in this fight. Whether you already have solar panels installed, or are thinking about getting them, you will definitely need net metering to help balance your electric bills. In addition to calling or writing your local representatives, you can sign petitions like this one to show your support for net metering.
